About our Featured House Plans & Featured Home Floor Plans...
The House Plan Shop is currently featuring Plantation home plans. These designs evoke thoughts of grand manors highlighted with notable characteristics such as column-lined porches and/or a porch-on-top-of-porch arrangement. Plantation homes originated in Louisiana and the surrounding areas, and they became popular in the 1700s. Southern landowners began establishing large plantations composed of hundreds of acres of land used for growing various crops. While most plantation homes started as simple homes of farmers, they were replaced with larger and more impressive homes when farmers found success growing commercial crops such as cotton, tobacco and sugarcane. Plantation homes are closely related to Southern house plans.
In most cases, today’s plantation homes are two-story designs. They can range in size, but nearly all of them showcase robust porch columns and sweeping front porches. Their floor plans often feature “wings”, curved staircases, and a centrally located front door. They often incorporate details of other architectural sub-styles such as Greek Revival, Charleston and Creole styles. Plantation homes often showed off the wealth of the farmer.
