Once known to be the outbuildings of large estates where carriages were stored, these designs have evolved with our changing lifestyles and continue to be a popular accessory structure to many homes. Today’s carriage house plans are closely related to garage apartments offering parking and compact, yet comfortable, living quarters. Typically, the living space offers one or two bedrooms and a full bath with the common gathering areas combined into one open and flexible living space. Carriage house plans vary in size, architectural style and finished living space. Various arrangements of garage doors, garage bays and other special features further expand the selection of available designs. Small, practical and efficient, carriage houses are a suitable alternative for Cabin or Cottage house plans and Vacation homes. The majority of today’s carriage houses feature a 2-car or 3-car garage on the main level with living space above. However, some carriage house plans are designed with the garage and the living quarters on one level resembling a cottage with an attached garage, ideal for a mother-in-law suite.
