About Cape Cod House Plans

Cape Cod House PlanWhen the New England colonies started to form in the 17th century, so did an architectural style that remains desirable to this day. Cape Cod house plans owe their origins to traditional English builds known as "hall and parlor houses," and were adapted to withstand the stormy weather of what would become the American Northeast. A common format evolved for the Cape Cod home plans, typified by symmetrical, one or two story builds of relatively small size--about 1,000 to 2,000 square feet. They usually had a door in the center of the house, large chimneys, plain exterior, and all hardwood floors. The style, as the name implies, was common in the Cape Cod area, and a time of "colonial revival" beginning in the 1930's brought these elegantly simple models back into the American vernacular.

Revival Cape Cod Home Plans

Cape Cod Home PlanThe layouts of this style found at The House Plan Shop share much in common with the originals that formed among the fledgling New England seaboard. These Cape Cod house plans have a boxy character, and the exterior usually has little ornamentation. The steep roofline and dormer windows typical of the style that were developed to withstand New England storms are usually found in the modern styles. Also, Cape Cod home plans usually have an interior that reflects the boxiness of the exterior. Admirers of this style delight in the simple yet elegant builds of a classic that history has proved timeless.
