Plans: Ranch House Plans
Ranch house plans are generally designed with an asymmetrical footprint, offering an open floor plan with few walls and are built as one level. Sometimes known as single story home plans, rancher style houses and sprawling ranch home plans, these designs have tremendous variety in style and range from starter homes to empty-nester homes. While some designs feature steep gabled roofs or lavish exterior ornamentation, others may offer low-pitched hip roofs or a less detailed façade. There are no specific exterior characteristics defining ranch home plans other than they are noticeably built as a single level. These floor plans often feature a large attached garage, large picture windows, rear doors that open to a deck or patio, and living and dining areas combined into one. There are a few common layouts with a one-story floor plan. One design clusters bedrooms together and situates them on one side of the house, opposite the living areas. Another style offers a split bedroom floor plan where the master bedroom is on one side of the home and the secondary bedrooms are positioned on the other side providing privacy to the master suite. In some cases, ranch home plans are built on a walkout basement making them well suited for a sloping or hillside lot and adding finished living space. Occasionally, a wall of windows serves as a backdrop to the stairs leading to the finished lower level creating an atrium ranch plan. The split-level house plan or a raised ranch makes efficient use of space on a narrow lot by stacking levels. Some Contemporary homes and Small and Affordable house plans are designed as Ranch house plans.
