Ranch house plans are generally designed with an asymmetrical footprint, offering an open floor plan with few walls and are built as one level. Occasionally referred to as single-story home plans, rancher style houses and sprawling ranch home plans, these designs have a tremendous variety in style and size ranging from starter homes to empty-nester homes. Ranch designs can be found in many home plan categories including country house plans, European home plans and Craftsman designs.
One-story homes have no specific exterior characteristics other than they are noticeably built as one level. While some designs feature steep gabled roofs or lavish exterior ornamentation, others may offer low-pitched hip roofs or a less detailed façade. In many cases, these floor plans feature an attached garage, large picture windows, rear doors that open to a deck or patio, and living and dining areas combined into one. The bedroom-together design clusters bedrooms together and situates them on one side of the house, opposite the living areas. ranch home plans are built on a walkout basement making them well suited for a sloping or hillside lot and adding finished living space. Occasionally, a wall of windows serves as a backdrop to the stairs leading to the finished lower level creating an atrium ranch plan. These floor plans work well on lots such as golf courses and waterfronts with fantastic rear views.
