Plans: Carriage House Plans
Historically, Carriage houses were once known as the out buildings of large estates where carriages were stored. Today, these designs and their cousins, garage apartment plans, are typically detached garages with upper level living space. They are available in a wide variety of styles and sizes ranging from the number of garage bays to the living square footage on the second level. Generally, carriage house plans are two levels and feature storage for two or three cars on the ground level and living quarters above. However, not all of these designs are two levels. Some plans are only one level featuring a garage area on one side of the home and living quarters on the other side resembling a cottage with an attached garage. The apartment area typically consists of one or two bedrooms and baths and a combined cooking and living area, providing flexible living space. Accommodations are modest, but these designs can be used as a spare bedroom for guests, offer living quarters for a nanny or maid, provide space for a home office, workshop or studio, or take on the roll of a secondary residence. Carriage house plans are another alternative for Cabin and Cottage house plans and are closely related to Garage Apartment plans.
