Plans: Cape Cod House Plans

Cape Cod house plans are simply designed reflecting the style of the northeastern seaboard and the New England area. Originating in the 1700s, these New England homes are usually one or two stories and typically symmetrical with a rectangular floor plan. They range in size with a varying number of bedrooms and bathrooms, but generally have an open and central gathering area. Cape Cod home plans are sometimes characterized by a center door and steep roofline, often highlighted with dormers and side gables. These homes are designed to withstand the stormy weather of the Northeast. Occasionally referred to as saltbox houses, these designs usually offer an exterior of wood shingles or clapboard siding. Shutters are generally the only exterior ornamentation adorning their simple exteriors. New England house plans typically have a center-hall floor plan with family living areas and activity spaces on the first floor and sleeping quarters on the second floor providing privacy and peace and quiet at the end of the day. Often, Cape Cod style homes are often finished with hard wood floors. In some instances, these houses work well along a shoreline allowing them to blend well with other waterfront designs in the area. Generally, Cape Cod house plans share some similarities with Beach and Coastal house plans, as well as, Colonial house plans.
