Log home plans and their smaller cabin versions have been a source of shelter for hundreds of years. They became the typical homes of settlers and pioneers along the American frontier during westward expansion. Near the end of the 20th century, these designs became popular again offering a rustic alternative to the familiar and customary housing of today. Today’s modern designs are made primarily with pine logs or materials made to look like logs. True log homes are made from logs that have not been milled into conventional lumber. These homes are designed with relaxation and comfort of country house plans and can be of various styles, one or two stories and range in size from a simple log cabin to a luxurious house plan. There are a wide variety of designs available offering everything from a vacation home plan to a permanent residence. Prows incorporated into some of these designs and usually accommodate plenty of large, floor-to-ceiling windows capturing the fantastic views of the landscape. These elements provide a rustic feel and create the idea of living hand in hand with nature. Typically, these floor plans feature open living areas, an expansive great room for gathering, exposed interior logs and large radiant fireplaces. Usually, the exterior showcases covered porches, decorative stone accents and metal roofs. An added bonus, these homes are environmentally friendly. Logs are a renewable resource and their thermal characteristics generally exceed the minimum energy efficiency code requirements making log home designs an earth-conscious substitute for common house plans. A log home plan is an ideal alternative for a Cabin and Cottage house plan, Country home plan or Vacation design.
